{"id":205673,"date":"2026-06-03T07:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/?p=205673"},"modified":"2026-06-03T07:50:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T06:50:16","slug":"estee-lauder-puig-collapsed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/blog\/2026\/06\/estee-lauder-puig-collapsed\/","title":{"rendered":"Est\u00e9e Lauder says Puig merger collapsed over price concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"65\" data-end=\"241\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteelauder.co.uk\/?srsltid=AfmBOooSrHVV80PnlvFBI1sir4e8KooC960kmLW1jySn7cYeNKbRoChA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Est\u00e9e Lauder<\/a> chief executive St\u00e9phane de La Faverie has said the cosmetics giant\u2019s proposed merger with Jean Paul Gaultier-owner Puig collapsed because the price was not right.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"243\" data-end=\"413\">The US beauty group and Puig ended negotiations late last month over a deal that would have created a major premium beauty business better placed to compete with L\u2019Or\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"415\" data-end=\"581\">Speaking at a Deutsche Bank consumer conference in Paris, de La Faverie said Est\u00e9e Lauder remained open to acquisitions, but only where the financial case made sense.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"699\">\u201cIf we cannot reach the growth and the profitability at the right price point, then that is not an option,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"701\" data-end=\"798\">\u201cAnd this is why, obviously, this deal didn\u2019t go through, because it was not at the right price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"876\">He added that Est\u00e9e Lauder would continue to assess potential opportunities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1117\">The talks reportedly broke down following a series of complications, including leaks, disagreements between the controlling families behind the two businesses and demands from stakeholders, including make-up entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1326\">A tie-up would have brought together Est\u00e9e Lauder\u2019s portfolio, which includes Clinique and M.A.C, with Puig\u2019s luxury beauty and fashion brands, which include Jean Paul Gaultier, Rabanne and Carolina Herrera.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1441\">The comments come as Est\u00e9e Lauder pushes ahead with its turnaround plan amid pressure on sales and profitability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1569\">In May, the beauty giant said it would cut between 9,000 and 10,000 jobs globally as part of its \u201cBeauty Reimagined\u201d strategy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1715\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The programme is designed to simplify the business and accelerate growth, with Est\u00e9e Lauder targeting up to $1.2 billion in annual cost savings.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/newsletter-sign-up-retail-gazette?utm_source=Website&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_campaign=SignUp\">Click here to sign up to Retail Gazette\u2018s free daily email newsletter<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Est\u00e9e Lauder chief executive St\u00e9phane de La Faverie has said the cosmetics giant\u2019s proposed merger with Jean Paul Gaultier-owner Puig collapsed because the price was not right.
